ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Across The Life Span, PLLC (ATLS) is an integrated behavioral health, primary care, and opioid addiction treatment organization serving Caswell, Person, Guilford, and Alamance Counties in North Carolina under NC Medicaid. Guided by a trauma-informed, recovery-oriented philosophy, ATLS delivers whole-person care to individuals and families across all life stages. Our multi-disciplinary clinical team includes licensed therapists, nurse practitioners, Qualified Professionals, Certified Peer Support Specialists, and primary care providers working in close collaboration to address the full continuum of behavioral and physical health needs.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Mental Health Counselor provides direct, evidence-based outpatient mental health therapy services to individuals, couples, families, and groups experiencing a range of mental health and co-occurring substance use challenges. The counselor maintains a consistent caseload, develops individualized treatment plans grounded in best practices, and delivers therapeutic services within ATLS's integrated care model.
The position may be filled by a fully licensed clinician (LCMHC, LCSW, LMFT) or a provisionally licensed clinician (LCMHC-A, LCSWA, LMFTA) working under qualified clinical supervision toward independent licensure. This is a multi-site role serving any combination of the Roxboro, Yanceyville, Greensboro, other ATLS service locations, as assigned by the Clinical Director and CEO.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Therapy Services

Provide individual, family, and group therapy to adults, adolescents, and/or children presenting with mental health conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, trauma and PTSD, bipolar disorder, adjustment disorders, grief and loss, and co-occurring substance use disorders

Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and diagnostic evaluations in accordance with DSM-5-TR criteria

Develop, implement, and monitor individualized, strengths-based treatment plans with measurable goals and objectives in collaboration with each consumer
-
Deliver evidence-based therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, and other clinically appropriate approaches

Facilitate psychoeducation for consumers and family members regarding mental health diagnoses, treatment options, medication management, and coping strategies

Conduct ongoing risk assessments and implement safety planning for consumers presenting with suicidal ideation, self-harm, or other safety concerns

Provide crisis intervention support and coordinate with crisis services, emergency systems, and ATLS leadership as clinically indicated
Co-Occurring Disorder & Integrated Care
-
Provide therapy services for consumers with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, incorporating Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment (IDDT) principles

Collaborate with the ATLS MAT/OAT program team to support individuals in medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder through co-occurring mental health services

Coordinate with primary care providers, nurse practitioners, and the Medical Director to ensure holistic, integrated care planning

Participate in multidisciplinary care conferences and warm handoffs with QPs, CPSSs, and other team members
Treatment Planning & Care Coordination

Complete Comprehensive Clinical Assessments (CCAs), Person-Centered Plans (PCPs), and treatment plan updates within NC Medicaid required timeframes

Coordinate referrals to higher levels of care, community resources, specialty mental health services, psychiatric providers, and social supports as clinically appropriate

Provide transition planning and continuity of care support for consumers moving between levels of care or transferring to/from other providers

Collaborate with community agencies, schools, courts, DSS, and other external partners to support consumer goals with appropriate consent
Documentation & Compliance
-
Maintain accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) in compliance with NC Medicaid, HIPAA, 45 CFR Parts 160 and 164, and all applicable ATLS policies

Complete all clinical documentation — including progress notes, treatment plan reviews, and discharge summaries — within ATLS-established timeframes

Adhere to ATLS two-level document review workflow for clinical records

Accurately document diagnosis codes (ICD-10-CM) and procedure codes in compliance with NC Medicaid Outpatient Behavioral Health service definitions

Fulfill all mandatory reporting obligations under N.C.G.S. § 7B-301 (child abuse/neglect) and applicable adult protective services statutes
Supervision & Professional Development
-
Provisionally licensed staff: actively participate in individual and/or group clinical supervision as required by the NC Licensing Board toward independent licensure

Maintain current licensure or provisional licensure in good standing with the applicable North Carolina licensing board

Complete all required continuing education units (CEUs) for licensure renewal
-
Participate in ATLS staff trainings, case consultations, and professional development activities
-
Adhere to the ethical standards of the applicable NC licensing board and ATLS professional conduct policies

Perform other duties as assigned by the Clinical Director or CEO

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
-
Master's degree in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, psychology, or a closely related human services field from a CACREP-accredited or equivalent program

Current, unrestricted licensure or provisional licensure in the State of North Carolina in one of the credentials listed above (LCMHC, LCMHC-A, LCSW, LCSWA, LMFT, or LMFTA)

Knowledge of DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria and evidence-based therapeutic modalities
-
Experience or training in trauma-informed care and working with diverse populations
-
Ability to pass criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen
-
Valid North Carolina driver's license (required for multi-site travel)

Proficiency in electronic health records and Microsoft Office applications
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills suitable for professional clinical documentation
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Fully independent licensure (LCMHC, LCSW, or LMFT)
-
Experience in an NC Medicaid-funded outpatient behavioral health or integrated care setting

Demonstrated competency in at least one evidence-based modality (CBT, TF-CBT, DBT, EMDR, MI, or equivalent)

Experience providing therapy for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
-
Familiarity with NC Medicaid Outpatient Behavioral Health service definitions and documentation requirements

Experience with WellSky, NC Tracks, or similar EHR/billing platforms
-
Bilingual or multilingual communication abilities
-
NPI registration or willingness to obtain NPI prior to start date
WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS
This position may be assigned to one or more ATLS clinical locations in Roxboro, Yanceyville, Greensboro, and/or Surrounding service areas in North Carolina. Telehealth service delivery may be included consistent with consumer consent, NC Medicaid telehealth policies, and ATLS operational guidelines. CLINICAL SUPERVISION
ATLS provides clinical supervision for provisionally licensed clinicians (LCMHC-A, LCSWA, LMFTA) working toward independent licensure. Supervision is provided by a qualified LCSW or LCMHC supervisor in accordance with applicable NC Licensing Board requirements. ATLS is committed to supporting clinicians in achieving full independent licensure. Supervision hours and format will be specified in the individual supervision agreement.
